And though it is recorded in Dolby Digital, it is monophonic and not in surround sound so the audio quality is lackluster. So the transfer copy is not especially vivid or clear. The not so good, the DVD is not in high def, nor is the film available in blu ray at least as of 02/19. If you have never seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so! It now carries a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoe s. However once it became a regular television matinee offering, it gained classic status and critical raves for being the gem that it is. Though the most expensive comedy films made for its time, it was a box office and critical failure upon initial release, recovering only half of its $4,000,000 budget.
Every aspect of this film is five star, from the story line, to the script, the casting, the performances, the music and lyrics and it even has a remarkably clever opening scene featuring Kaye singing a song elaborating on the credits.
It features Danny Kaye in one of his best performances.

“I wanted to honor the themes and achievements in their lives.One of the best and most classic musical comedies ever made, this movie is spectacularly shot in vibrant Technicolor with gorgeous sets and costumes. “It’s a bench that a close friend of the family designed and sculptured with images such as a chef’s hat, musical notes, a piano, a baseball bat, the UNICEF emblem, and an airplane,” said Dena. “We have started a weaving project for women and schools in India, built a park in Cairo, funded a baroque music festival in France, an opera company in Sydney, and a food pantry in Aspen.”Īfter his death and cremation, Kaye’s wife kept his ashes and upon her cremation four years later, the couple were laid to rest together in a New York cemetery, the location marked with a unique memorial. “He received an Honorary Oscar (1954) and also the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1981) for his humanitarian work.”ĭena, who became a journalist and author, now heads the Danny Kaye and Sylvia Fine Kaye Foundation, which funds projects around the world. “He became UNICEF’s first spokesman in 1954,” noted Dena. Kaye toured Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Myanmar and Thailand to meet and entertain children for the documentary ‘Assignment Children,’ released in 1955. The chance meeting led to a lifetime devotion to UNICEF and the world’s children. “He was sitting next to the head of UNICEF and the two had plenty of time to talk.” “He was on a flight from London to New York when the plane had to turn back,” said Dena. It was while flying, as a passenger in 1953, that Kaye first learned about UNICEF. “One of his pledges to my mother and me was that he’d never fly in bad weather and would always have a copilot.” “He conducted orchestras, was a master of Chinese cooking, owned a baseball team (part owner of the Seattle Mariners), worked tirelessly as a humanitarian for UNICEF, and was a jet pilot,” recalled Dena. And in New York, we’d go to a coffee shop and have a fried egg eating contest to see who could get the egg into their mouth without breaking the yolk.”īut handling eggs wasn’t Kaye’s only off-screen talent. “He used to make scrambled eggs with onions and green peppers.
“One of the earliest memories of my father is seeing him in front of the stove making Christmas breakfast,” she recalled. Despite the Hollywood demands facing her parents – her mother, Sylvia Fine (1913-1991), was a lyricist, composer and producer who wrote many of Kaye’s songs – Dena says her parents were determined to raise her in a loving family.
